After a 15 year long career with his band Archie Bell & the Drells, Bell embarked on his first venture as a solo artist. "I Never Had it So Good" features Bell taking an even more soulful and melodic approach to the music he and his band had been known for. He and the Drells eventually reunited, however, and continued to perform well into the latter half of the 2010s.
