In 1981 G.E. Smith released his first solo album, "In the World". With Paul Simon and Howard Shore singing backup vocals on the album, this would lead to Smith embarking on separate endeavours from his years as part of Hall & Oates. After Hall & Oates went into a hiatus in 1985, he then served as the musical director of the sketch-comedy show Saturday Night Live from 1985 to 1995, where he was the leader of the Saturday Night Live Band.
